Yesterday it was lovely to send
my mind back to Raffles in Singapore but today’s outing was much nearer to home
– just up the road to Ashcombe Park in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. A 13 hectare site of hillock and grassland
situated between the Upper Bristol Road and Milton Road. There are two children’s play areas plus a
small café with seasonal opening hours.
A children’s yachting pool was opened in the 1950s and a pitch &
putt course in the 1960s. According to
Parks & Garden UK (http://www.parksandgardens.org/places-and-people/site/156/history
) the site was purchased by the waterworks in the late 1880s and Weston’s first
piped water supply came from springs at this site. The park itself was opened in 1902. At the Milton Road end of the park there is a
bowling green with delightful pavilion. This
area proves to be an oasis situated amidst residential streets and
it was enjoyable to wander through tree lined avenues and climb the hill to the
rest pavilion.
I was amused to see the huge
litter container and commend the council for such an ingenious design –
although I think it would only be very tall fathers who could reach the top.
I looked around for the toilets
which are listed on the Council’s pdf of public conveniences. Oh dear – a woeful sight met my eyes. A load of empty paint pots atop a pile of
rubble barred the way to a door and the whole block was cordoned off with high
rails.
I did find a sign to the Gents
Toilet but there does not appear to be a lot of privacy:
Us poor ladies fair no better
with nothing more than a discarded paint pot and a tree trunk to lean
against:
To be fair to the Council I
presume that these toilets are in the process of being refurbished but I could
find no sign to say that the work was being undertaken or when it was expected
to be completed.
